Heat pump vs Solar on the Gold Coast, QLD – Swimming Pool Heating
When looking to heat your swimming pool, there are a couple of options that you can choose from including a heat pump and solar. A common question that we get asked every day is “Which is better?” This is a great question, however there isn’t just one answer that fits all as each install can vary to which one suits better depending on a few different factors including location, roof space availability, time of year wanting to swim and ongoing costing etc. Living on the Gold Coast, we are lucky enough to enjoy beautiful weather all year round, however that doesn’t mean that the water temperature is enjoyable which is where swimming pool heating comes in.
Heat Pump

Let’s talk about a heat pump first. These tend to be a slightly more popular choice due to their amazing advantages of heating. The first pro to a heat pump is its ability to heat your swimming pool all year round, even through winter, allowing you to get the most out of your pool. Not everyone wants to swim through winter, in fact only the brave do this, however on the occasions when you are having a party, or those relatives head over from overseas and you want to make the most of your outdoor living, a heat pump is going to provide you with the necessary temperature to keep everyone toasty warm and entertained in the pool.
With a heat pump, you can set a desired temperature and know that no matter the day or time of year, your pool will be at that temperature. This gives many people peace of mind that they are getting the most out of their purchase.
The reliability of a heat pump is something that is important to our customers. They like to know that there will not be ongoing issues or errors and that the pool will constantly be heating, no matter the weather or time of year. When your pool heating system is consistent, everyone is happy, including us!
Cooling Mode
A very “cool” feature, especially on the Gold Coast,QLD is the cooling feature. In the height of summer, you’ve had a long day in the heat and all you want to do is hop into a nice cool pool when you get home. You get your swimmers on, jump in and realise it’s as warm as a bath!. That’s not ideal at all! The cooling feature can be changed via an app on your phone to go into cooling mode where the heat pump goes into a reverse cycle mode and instead of heating your pool water, it cools it, ready for your oh so very relaxing cool down swim at the end of the day. This feature can also be set on the heat pump and can be put on a timer for whenever suits your schedule.
Maintenance of a heat pump
Ongoing maintenance of heat pumps are relatively low and only require a service ideally once a year if budget permits and the great thing about these are that any errors can most of the time be rectified via phone troubleshooting. Not that this is common but it’s still a pro.
So, if you are looking to get your swimming pool heated and the above sounds right up your alley, a heat pump is the way to go.
Solar Pool Heating

Now, let’s talk about solar. This can sometimes be confused by electricity solar panels, however pool heating solar is very different and is a popular choice for those who want the most energy efficient heating system and are conscious of helping the environment. The way solar works which saves on power is by using the sun to heat the pool water via rubber matting tubes that are located on the roof, where the pool water is pushed up and on and it is heated by the sun’s warmth. The only electrical output is the pump and controller which is affordable to run throughout the summer season, saving you money each year!
Solar is designed to extend your swimming season and generally heats your pool from September through April, give or take a few different factors including shading, air temperature, cloudy days etc. The majority of people only want to swim part of the year which is why solar is a great choice.
Maintenance of Solar
Ongoing maintenance of solar matting is low, as long as you keep on top of the yearly inspections/service as prevention is key. As there are less moving parts, there is less to go wrong with solar. The most common issue is unfortunately out of anyone’s control, the weather! However, if you keep on top of the inspections, any small issues that pop up can be quickly and easily fixed to prevent a more serious problem down the track.
Both options of swimming pool heating can be controlled by yourself, where you can choose what temperature you want your pool to be as well as running on hours that suit you.
