Heat pump errors and how to fix them

Heat pump errors and how to fix them

The best way to check out what the error that is displaying is to have a look in the manual to see if you can find out what the issue is. Check out our product manuals here. Below are a few of the not so common heat pump errors and how to fix them.

Heat pump is leaking

This is most likely condensation. To test if this is condensation, you simply need to turn the heat pump OFF for 30 mins but allow the filtration to keep running. If the leak stops, it is condensation. If the leak continues, there may be a leak somewhere. Sometimes if there is water coming from a valve, you can turn the system OFF including the filtration, then hand tighten the valve and this may stop any leaking. If the heat pump is still  leaking after checking the above, you may need a  technician to come out for a service.

E3 Error showing on the display

This is a water flow issue. To troubleshoot this you will need to check the following and answer these questions.

  1. Is the filtration system running? Without water flow going through the heat pump, the error will show. Turn the filtration system on and this may clear the error.
  2. Is the skimmer box clogged up with leaves or debris? If so, please remove it.
  3. Is the water level in the pool high enough to cover the skimmer box? If not, please top up the pool water level.
  4. Is the pool pump primed? This means, is water full to the top of the clear lid on the pump? If the lid is not on correctly, it will allow air in and cause no water flow.
  5. Has the filter been backwashed or the cartridge filter been cleaned lately? If not maintained, this will prevent water flow. Your local pool maintenance guy will be able to help with this.
  6. Check that the 3-way valve has not been closed off to the heat pump. You need to have some water flowing to the heat pump and some flowing to the filtration. If the valve is closed to the heat pump pipes, this will cause no water flow.

F9 Error showing on the display

This shows in the manuals as a board issue or can show after a power surge. This can most often be cleared by performing a reset on the heat pump. Turn the heat pump off at the power completely for about 10 mins. This needs to be done from the electrical power, not just the display. After 10 mins, turn it back on and this generally clears the error. If not, a new PC board or Fan motor may be required and you will need to have a technician attend for a service.

There is nothing on the display and it will not turn on

There could be a few different reasons for this so please take a look at the below and follow the instructions.

  1. You can check your heat pump manual as they are all slightly different, however some pumps have a lock button on the display and will need to be pressed or held down for 3 seconds to unlock the screen.
  2. Ensure the circuit break has not tripped and there is power going to the heat pump. If it is plugged into a socket, you can test the sock with another electrical device if you choose. You can also get an electrician to test this or test with a multimeter.
  3. If the heat pump is showing power, however, it will not turn on right away, please wait for a few minutes. Heat pumps are soft start devices and take a few minutes to get going. If the fan doesn’t come on right away, please be patient and wait a few minutes.

It is not heated to the set temperature

This can be a simple fix so please take a look at the below and check your heat pump.

  1. How long is your heat pump set to run for? They need to run 8-10 hours a day approx. during the day and not at night. This needs to be in 1 consecutive go and not split between 2-3 sessions.
  2. If you have only just turned on the heat pump a few hours ago, you will need to allow up to 72 hours for the pool to be heated to the desired 28 degree temperature.
  3. Is the heat pump in heating mode and not in cooling mode? The heating mode will display as a sun, just like it does on an airconditioning remote.
  4. Do you have your pool cover on during the day? A pool cover will prevent heat loss and allow your pool to heat quicker.
  5. Do you have a water feature like a waterfall or an infinity edge? When these are running during the heating times, the water will lose a lot of heat so it is ideal to have these features off during heating times.
  6. Check that your set temperature is sitting at 28 degrees and has not been lowered.
  7. The “IN” temperature should be 2 degrees cooler than the “OUT” temperature. If this has the 2 degree differential then the heat pump is working just fine and you may need to be patient or add a cover.
